Xerostomia is the for the symptom of a sensation of dryness in the mouth. The term comes from the Greek xeros (dry) and stoma (mouth). Normal saliva production when resting is around 0.03-04 ml/min. Xerostomia does not necessarily indicate an objective lack of mucous of the mouth, but rather reduced saliva production. The sensation of dryness in the mouth varies in each individual and not all cases of hyposalivation are accompanied by dry mouth.
