WHO CAN BE TREATED AT THE TEKNON DRY MOUTH UNIT?

The Dry Mouth Unit is mainly aimed at patients who suffer from dry mouth (xerostomia) or reduced saliva production (hypo-salivation) (both conditions are not always present) brought on by:

  • autoimmune diseases such as Sjögren disorder (SjS), and other secondary conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus;
  • medication. There are over 500 drugs with oral dryness as a side effect. The most common include antidepressants, anxiolytics, antihistamines, medication for high blood pressure, or proton pump inhibitors (for example, omeprazole);
  • head and neck radiotherapy, especially in the treatment of cancer. One very common side effect is the destruction of the parenchyma cells of the salivary gland;
  • other physiopathologies. Many physiopathologies can cause oral dryness, such as Sjögren disorder, aging, breathing through the mouth, smoking or use of narcotics, among others.
